Tips from Legal Recruiters
Yesterday, I spent time discussing the legal job market with a top legal recruiter. Here are some of her tips for getting the most of your relationship with your headhunter: You and your legal recruiter are a team. You both have the same goal: a long-term placement. A good recruiter wants a long-term relationship with both you and employers.
Be forthcoming with information. You don't have to go into the gory details of your life story, but you do need to be honest and answer her questions. The more your recruiter knows about you, your situation, and your experience, the more likely it is she can find a good fit.
Be an active participant in your job search. Stay involved! A tight job market is no place for passive job hunters. Ask your recruiter for details about job opportunities. How much does she know about the employer? The job? Their reasons for hiring? Who you would report to?
If you don't feel comfortable after your initial discussions with a recruiter, then find another one.
