I see the limitations in my own thought

“It’s funny to watch your thought process. I’m realizing that I just sucked the life out of my résumé. The more we talk, the more I see the limitations in my own thought in how to market and present my work and I’m impressed with how succinct the new résumé is. This has been immensely valuable.”

I felt prepared

“It’s good. It’s intense. It’s everything I thought it would be and more. I really like interacting with the board and it’s a huge portion of my job. I learn something new everyday. I did interview with the executive team and have to be approved by the board and the GC of the majority stockholder, but I felt prepared for the whole process.”

a subtlety to what you do that’s very elegant

“I read through the résumé we worked on and I’m really pleased with it. I’ve got to say, it just has a completely different feel to it than my original. It’s more human. I really like the framing of each job. It’s fantastic. And just really tells a story where my old résumé didn’t. I’m not used to thinking about accomplishments instead of tasks. In some ways, it’s very obvious, but there’s a subtlety to what you do that’s very elegant. I guess what I’m trying to say is that I’m happy. I’ve enjoyed our conversations—not only because they've been super productive and helpful—but also because like talking to you. It’s been a shot of confidence at time when work has been depressing.”

totally lost about marketing myself

“That was a lot to take in, Jared, but it has been extremely helpful and yours your points on how to look for a job [for someone in my senior position] is spot on. Last time I looked for a job, LinkedIn barely existed. I’m good at personal relationships, but I’m totally lost about marketing myself. I like the idea of condensing my story under categorized bullet points; getting as specific as I need to be by including some wins, without having to provide a laundry list. I’'ll be in touch again after I’ve locked myself in a room and done a couple of JDAs!"
